For someone born before January 2, 1945, filing single with one exemption, adjusted gross income would have to be over $10,750 in order to owe taxes for 2009. The standard deduction would be $7,100 and the one exemption is $3,650. This is assuming that you are not eligible for the making work pay credit, or the government retiree credit. If eligible for either of these credits, the amount you could earn before owing federal taxes would increase slightly.
