About the Expert
I obtained my EA Certification in 2003. I then moved to Mexico and started a Tax Service in Guadalajara. My clients included expat workers, business owners, retirees and Mexican nationals. I prepared state tax returns for a variety of states, as people from all over the US live and work in Mexico. Since returning from Mexico, I have worked independently and with CPA's and other tax professionals preparing individual and business returns. I currently reside in Texas, and have additional experience preparing returns for farmers, ranchers & mineral investors. View Profile

Basically, your son, daughter, stepchild, or other defined close relative, who was under 19 at the end of 2009, is a qualifying child for EIC in 2009 if they lived with you for over half of the year. This generally means that they must have lived with you for 183 or more days.
This is the basic definition and there are other qualifications for EIC. I will be happy to address these if you want to give me more details on your income, citizenship, filling status and so on.
