what is the differences and benefits for us as a couple to file jointly, as individuals or head of household?

If you were married and lived together at any time during the last 6 months of 2009, neither one of you can file as Head of Household. That leaves your choices as Married Filing Separately or Married Filing Jointly. 9 times out of 10, Married Filing Jointly will result in a lower overall tax.
