IRS Audit Help
by ELIZABETH CHECKLEYWhile we’re sure that you did your best to complete your taxes, it’s possible that the IRS will select you for a dreaded audit. This is usually the result of taking a large number of deductions, incorrect numbers, unreported income or anything else that is outside of the norm for people in your income bracket. The IRS will audit your records, and ask for more information to determine if you have been paying the proper amount of taxes.
What to Do in Case of an IRS Audit?
- Carefully read the notice carefully, so you know what is required.
- Make sure that your records are organized. This makes it more likely that the audit will be quicker, and easier to conduct. If you’re well organized, the auditor may be more inclined to believe that your deductions are well documented and true.
- If you’re missing any relevant documents, make sure that you obtain duplicates ahead of the audit. Without supporting documentation, auditors may deny your deductions.
- Bring only the documents that you’re asked for. Don’t give the IRS cause to investigate further.
- Make sure that you only provide the auditor with copies, as it’s not the IRS’ responsibility if your documents are lost while in their possession.
- Don’t get off topic. It is the job of an auditor to ask probing questions to find out if you’re telling the truth or not about your return. Make sure that you stay on point when answering questions, and provide as little other information as possible.
- Be nice to the auditor! They’re more likely to see things your way if you’re friendly, and treat them well. Need More Help? Click here to Find an IRS Audit Expert
